I’ve been really open about my struggles with ADHD in the workplace. I’ve had over 30 different job titles, hundreds of job interviews, been fired, quit, and I’ve cried a lot in-between. To say that I’ve struggled in the workplace is actually a gross understatement. Because ADHD has so deeply impacted my career journey, I am now very passionate about helping other ADHDers find workplace accommodations.

What are some workplace accommodations for ADHD? And how can you ask for them?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a workplace accommodation as: a modification or adjustment to a job, the work environment, or the way things are usually done during the hiring process. If you have ADHD, you are covered and accommodations may be necessary for you to complete your work.

While each person is unique, accommodations for workers with ADHD could involve simple modifications such as:

  • Using headphones for listening to music or earplugs to minimize noise distractions

  • Asking for a personal workspace, working remotely from home, or working during non-office hours

  • Requesting regular, constructive feedback or check-ins

  • Asking for assigned due dates for each task when possible

  • Taking multiple, short breaks throughout the day

These are just a few examples of ways that employers can bridge the gap and help ADHD employees thrive at work.
